abuse of technology- Ujjainee

Jasmine, a talented teenager, loved to post all her dance videos on social media. She was energetic and danced with full power. But her dance wasn’t liked by all. Some found it good while others thought it was over-doing. Well, it is okay to have a personal opinion but is it okay to bully someone just because they do not fit in your standards?

Jasmine was subjected to continuous cyberbullying. Cruel comments about the way she danced and even her personal life filled her online profile. She finally reported the online assault with the help of a trusted friend and found peace in the dancing community. Jasmine, now empowered, used her dancing as an act to raise awareness and inspire others. The dance community as well as Jasmine’s followers and friends stood together against online harassment, spreading empathy. Jasmine regained her passion, winning over cyberbullying and fighting for a more compassionate social media platform.

I know many of you can relate to the above story. The internet has become an integral part of our lives and that's how we stay connected to the world. But every positive comes with a negative. In addition to the beneficial features, there are certain negative parts of the digital domain that must be addressed, such as cyberbullying and online harassment. People who become victims slip into depression, get lower self-esteem which eventually takes a toll on their mental health as well.

Understanding Cyberbullying and Online Harassment:

Cyber means things related to computers or technology and bullying means to intimidate someone or to threaten and spread hate for a person. Online harassment involves a broader variety of abusive behaviors, such as threats, stalking, hate speech, and spreading of false information. Bullies on the internet feel safe as most of the time the victims do not complain or do not fight back. So they get a sense of accomplishment without facing any consequences.

The Devastating Effects:

Cyberbullying and online abuse have serious consequences that ought not to be underestimated. Victims frequently report increased stress, worry, and sadness, as well as a reduction in scholastic or job performance. Because the abuse can be extensive and persistent, penetrating victims' personal areas regardless of whether they try to disconnect, the online aspect of these acts can exacerbate their impact. It has sadly led to acts of self-harm in severe circumstances. Hence, this needs to be prioritized and addressed with utmost sensitivity.

Empowering Youth and Promoting Digital Citizenship:

To effectively tackle cyberbullying and online abuse, we must prioritize awareness-building and education among youth. It is critical to empower kids to develop into responsible digital citizens. We should encourage frank dialogues about security on the internet, empathy, and the implications of our online behavior. Teaching young people to think critically, accept diversity, and speak out against online harassment can have a good ripple effect.

Building Supportive Communities:

Safe digital spaces necessitate the active participation of educators, parents, users of internet users, and regulators. Parents should monitor their children's internet activity, develop lines for interaction, and provide direction on ethical technology use. Anti-bullying programs can be introduced in the school. Along with that, how to report crimes, and why not to tolerate any hateful comments in the first step should be taught. Social media sites and internet groups must implement stringent anti-harassment standards, as well as provide robust reporting methods and victim support.

Taking Action:

Understand that you aren't alone when you or anyone you know becomes the target of bullying or online abuse. Seek help from trusted people, such as relatives, close companions, or school counselors. Document abusive incidents, block culprits, and report them to the appropriate platforms. Organizations and assistance lines devoted to fighting cybercrime can also offer advice, tools, or a listening ear.

Conclusion:

In today's digitally evolving world, cyberbullying and online abuse offer substantial issues. However, by boosting collective knowledge, cultivating empathy, and encouraging ethical use of technology, we can build a more secure and accessible online environment for all. Let us all make sure that we put a stop to any kind of bullying and to educate youths about the same. Even a small step will make a big impact, you can always start with teaching your known people!
