“Don’t Cast Pearls Before Swine”- Nayan Kaslikar

( Edited by Divya Jain )

Don't waste your efforts on those who won't appreciate your kind actions. It is said that this proverb is adapted from a saying of Jesus from the Gospels, “Cast not pearls before swine”. Jesus appears to be warning his disciples to preach only before receptive audiences.

If you say that someone is casting pearls before swine, you mean that they are wasting their time by offering something that is helpful or valuable to someone who does not appreciate or understand it.

Swine is a formal word for pig. Do you know that It feeds on waste! It does not have the capability to taste or sense something good. Hence casting diamonds before swine which doesn’t know their true value is foolish. There are people who do not value the valuable things in life. Giving precious things to people who can not appreciate them is like casting pearls before swine.

We often come to situations, where we love someone of very high quality, who is uncultured and doesn’t realize its value. As human beings, we possess a tendency to showcase our love and care for the people around us. But there are people who do not know its worth.

5 points to deal with such situations:

  1. Know Your Worth: Endure your true self. Do not get too close to somebody in a short span of time. Learn to do things by yourself. Understand that not everyone would have the same taste as you. Sprinkle and shower your love to those who genuinely have the capacity to multiply it to you. Do things for others, when they are actually necessary. Never lower yourself for those who take you for granted. Love and Care should not come to you at the cost of your self-respect.

  2. Prioritize Yourself – Care about yourself the most. People exist, who will use you all time. They manipulate you with their good words, do not fall for their sweet words. If you come across any such situation, take a pause, breathe, think about yourself and then make a decision.

  3. Control Your Feelings – It is obvious that we tend to do anything for the people that matter to us. But when they don’t appreciate us, it is a heartbreaking moment for us. We try to find new ways to reach their heart. At this moment of great disguise, control your feelings. Do not go repeatedly to them and act like, that you could do nothing in this world without them. It only boosts their ego and disheartens you more and more.

  4. Follow the 'Give N Take' Relationship - 50-50 Rule is the best. The energy you give, you deserve the same amount of energy back. Carry ahead those people in your life’s journey with you, who truly try to swim oceans for you instead of the people who are not even willing to cross a single bridge for you.

  5. Try to Move On – People leave behind voids in our life. Let’s embrace those voids and try to move ahead. Voids can be beautiful too.

Accept the truth and move on. You came alone in this world and you have the power within to conquer this entire world. You do not need anybody to cross the road with you always. Do it yourself.

"Do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."
