This quote is remarkably apt in the scenario of today's world. It means that if you stay true to yourself and your virtues and still you lose people around it means they're fake. Thus it's their loss as they lost someone who would give them their everything and you lost someone who in reality didn't bother much about you.
The world is a cruel and dangerous place where you cannot trust anyone. People tend to behave nicely in front of you and backbiting is their favorite pass time. There are various reasons why people might pretend to be fake to you including their personal gains, attention, and even sympathy. Whatever their agenda is you should stay miles away from people who can use you for their purposes and then throw you away like trash. You deserve to be loved and cherished by good people around you who truly support you in every way and help you to become a better version of yourself.
People these days are pretty good at being pretentious and playing with your emotions. It is surprising as to what extent they go to pretending and how good they are at it. If you are a good human being and are empathetic towards others chances are someone might take advantage of this good nature of yours for their benefit leaving you troubled. This scenario has become extremely common these days and most of us might have faced this situation. A real person respects the opinions of others and treats others graciously.
On the other hand, a fake person always feels a sense of superiority over others and looks down on people around them. But these people are cunning enough to treat people who they will gain concerning achieving their personal goals. These people make relations with others for the sole purpose of gaining power and position by any means ethical or unethical. They don't have any moral sense embedded in them to stop them from taking the wrong path. This behavior is the polar opposite of real people who look out for long-term relations rather than using someone for their own.
Thus being real in this crafty world sometimes becomes a weakness as you are used by others. But being good is never a weakness as you get your reward sooner or later. An act of kindness done by you reaches you in one way or the other are times when you don't even expect it. At times you might feel disheartened and dejected but don't lose hope as karma does exist. We all have to pay for our actions whether wrong or right. These crafty people may seem to succeed in life for a substantial period but for the rest of their life, they'll reap what they sowed which is to pay for the sins that they have committed in their life. It hurts me to see those fake people who use the real ones for their purpose leave them heartbroken making it difficult for them to trust others who are good in real life.
Thus we need to read the people around us to protect ourselves from fake people.
